Service Member excited about starting a new chapter!

Hi everyone!

I've been in the service for six years. I have one more contract to complete and before I get out I intend to have at least five properties in three years.

My Why: I want to help my mother retire and I want to use the cash flow from my properties to do it.  I want financial freedom for myself and my wife. I want to use my time to do projects and hobbies that I love and value.

One of my leaders told me a story about a childhood acquaintance who inherited 500,000 from his grandmother's life insurance. He didn't invest in real estate, instead he spent it all a trip to Vegas via a rented jet that carried him and his entourage to an adventure they still reminisce about to this day. I'd like to think that I would have made smarter choices if I inherited that sum of money. I know I would have paid for my student loans and the rest I might have sacrificed to the might deity called 'Rat Race', which really wouldn't have been much better.

Building wealth through real estate is fairly new. It's like going to school again with how much I read, write, and listen to retrain my brain.

I'm excited for this new chapter and I hope to work with a motivated group of people!

Hi @J.C. Everett I am in almost the exact same situation! Personally I am saving money to put down on my first deal here in the next few months. I plan on house hacking a duplex or a single family home with a live in renter, however that may change depending on the property. Like you I am in the military as well, although I am in the National Guard and it seems you are active duty. Some books that I've read that have helped quite a bit are Hold: How to Find, Buy, and Rent Houses for Wealth and the BP Book The Book on Rental Property Investing. Both of these books have helped me game plan how I want to attack my first deal once I secure financing.
