To become a real estate agent or not?

Hello all -

I stumbled upon BP by accident while trying to find free information instead of paying some guru for it.  I LOVE BP! I feel like it has opened my world a bit and makes me super excited about future possibilities.

I am looking for some advice from BPers  - I respect and appreciate your time.

My husband is a general contractor. We have discussed for years the amount of money we pay out to agents to sell his houses and to purchase lots. Currently, he is building a spec home (not yet on contract with a realtor - even though he is approached by realtors often) and we'd love to eventually do a flip or two.  (Generally, he usually builds under contract so realtor costs are not involved.)  We also build and sell our own home every few years so again paying out agents costs to someone else.

My question - would it be worth it for me to get licensed in order to save some of those costs.  AND does one have to be licensed under a broker?  If so, do you think a broker might take on someone like me who doesn't actually want a full-time job, just wants to sell our own builds and purchase future projects - not that I wouldn't put in time while learning the ropes, just don't want to trade one 9-5 for another 9-5.

Currently, I am a teacher, have been for 18 years, and would really love a change. So saving money sounds amazing to me.

I appreciate any words of wisdom!

Thank you.

@Jennifer Winans - I wasn't sure about getting my license but I did and I am so thankful i did. I love having direct access to the MLS and being able to set up my own showings. Plus when ever you buy or sell your houses you get a discount.

Go for it!
