Newbie Investor, Staten Island N.Y. Matthew Divito
Hello everyone !
I’m glad to begin this Real estate investment journey with you all.
This is my first post on bigger pockets. I am eager to get to know as many of you as I can and to start learning as much as I can. I am currently reading Josh and Brandon‘s new book, which is excellent by the way.
As of now I am renting with my girlfriend in Staten Island and have been saving for a down payment. I originally was planning on buying a house just as a residence, but after listening to the Bigger pockets podcast and reading Rich dad poor dad, I want to make a smarter investment.
I am in a unique situation because I work for the police department and my primary residence is required to be in one of the five boroughs or Long Island. I grew up here in Staten Island as my girlfriend did. She works in New Jersey and I work in Brooklyn so Staten Island is the happy medium. I am very interested in buying a property to house hack, but Staten Island it’s quite expensive. I am also looking into buying a property in New Jersey to rent out so that I can make my first deal and really start investing.
My plan is to be able to retire in 10 years with both my pension and income from rental properties that are being run by a property management company. I have been employed by the PD for over 10 years and would be able to technically retire in 9.5 , but I do not plan to have to live on a fixed income for the rest of my life.
Thanks to anyone who took the time to read this
Sincerely,
Matthew

Hello! @Matthew Divito
Welcome to BP, and congratulations on making the decision to invest in your future via real estate.
I have written a few blog posts that may help you get started here on BP, and with your investing. Please click on the links, give them a read, and share your thoughts in the comments.
First is a post that I feel will help not get overwhelmed with the amount of info that is here on BP:
https://www.biggerpockets.com/blogs/5868/52761-the-simple-guide-to-getting-started-on-bp
The second is a post that will help get you focused with your real estate investing goals:

The last one is a post that will help you choose an “investor friendly” real estate agent.
There are many agents out there, but it’s important to choose the right one.
I love answering questions if you have any! Good Luck :)
