Brand new investor from Metro Detroit

Hi everyone!

My name is Alex, and as the title states I’m brand new to real estate investing. I’ve been so grateful for the articles and podcasts at BiggerPockets as I begin to educate myself, and so today today I’m taking the leap to become an active member on the forums!

I’m currently working full-time in cybersecurity in the Metro Detroit area, a field which has great career outlook, but I’d like to get a second income stream going with the goal of reaching financial independence by 40 (within 10 years).

After a lot of reading, and based on my current financial situation, it seems like the best first step for me is house hacking. I'm working hard to pay down debt and save for a down payment (I believe I'll qualify for an FHA loan) over the course of this year, with the hope of finding a duplex/triplex late this year or in early 2019.

With that said, I’m especially interested in learning more about low or no money down RE purchasing, the Detroit/Metro Detroit market, house hacking (what to look for in a house, what eventualities to plan for, cash reserve to have ready before it makes sense to make a purchase).

I’m excited to join this industrious community and learn from the best! Thanks in advance for any shared knowledge and feedback; I look forward to connecting and starting a conversation!

-Alex
