Brand spanking new from Utah (Orem/Provo area)

I am a bit overwhelmed to finally be posting on here. I made sure I got my picture up before I tried to introduce myself.

My name is Joshua Johnson and currently I live in Orem, Utah. I work as an Officer and am working towards a retirement that I am wanting to supplement with a Buy and Hold set of properties. I found Bigger Pockets on my journey to learn as much as I could and then my friend that is also trying to learn mentioned the podcast. I thought the name sounded familiar but didn't realize it was the same until I saw my bookmark on my computer.

My current goal right now is to have a few Buy and Hold properties. I listened to the Weekend Millionaire and really enjoyed the business model concept. My first goal at this point starting out is to find one single family home that I can rent out with enough cash flow that I won't have to pay for the taxes, management fees, and emergencies out of my own pocket. I have a bit of equity in my current house so I don't feel I have to start with too much of my personal savings.

My secondary goal after just starting with the one property is to get enough money that when I retire I will have about the same amount to live off of with the passive income. Right now that means about 5k a month. I am not worried about making that until I retire (about 8-9 years) so I feel I can take my time and hopefully do things right. honestly right now that just seems so far off and almost impossible.

Honestly I am just excited to be here right now. I don't have a lot of people that I can talk real estate with and I am so curious and just want to learn. I have held off so far from buying (because all that I have read is you don't really learn until you just do it) because I am trying to convince my wife that real estate is a good place to invest. (Any tips on helping a significant other to get on board would be welcome.)

Anyways, I hope to be a helpful happy part of this community. Thanks for reading.

Josh

P.S. Let me know if there are any other things I have missed that are important to mention. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the world of real estate investing!

It sounds like you have really thought through your situation and made specific goals and a plan to get there. That's great! I am fairly new to RE myself but it has already become an obsession, especially as I see the opportunities for financial freedom.

As for your wife, has she read or listened to any of the investing materials you have? I think learning about it is the best way to 1) understand the financial upside, and 2) not be intimidated or scared of it. Maybe talking to other ppl who are doing it would help. Feel free to message me and I can share my experiences or answer questions.

Best!

Susie
