Young Attorney getting into the real estate world

Hi BP!

I've been researching and loving the BP content and community here for some time. I'm preparing to move into real deals. I'm out of Saint Paul and Minneapolis MN. Twin Cities born and raised. I also attended college in Eau Claire Wisconsin about a half hour away and that is one of my potential farm areas.

I'm an attorney by trade (but don't take my posts as legal advice, please!) working in Information Technology / Software Commercial Sales Contracts. The benefit here is that I am deeply familiar with Scopes of Work, project management, negotiation and contract drafting. The downside is that Software is so free and unregulated that getting into something stricter like real estate investing leaves me a lot more "newbie" than you would think for an attorney. The bar exam doesn't teach many actionable skills when it comes to real estate - though I have understanding of how it works at the foundational legal layer. Fee simple absolute, and all that fun stuff. I've certainly got a good working knowledge of business entities too, which can be helpful too.

A few years back, I volunteered in the Housing and Conciliation Court in Ramsey county and I've since kept up to date on landlord tenant law. I also worked as a caretaker for a 24 unit apartment through law school.

I'd love to chat and network with any of you other folks out here in the Twin Cities. I know I've got a lot to learn. I'd be more than willing to help point folks in the right direction with respect to landlord/tenant law here in MN (though I won't be able to give straight legal advice, since I am a 1 client only in-house attorney).  But for a smart motivated bunch like yourselves I can help you find the things you need to know to come to your own conclusions.
