New Investor from San Diego
Greetings BP Community!
My name is Tanner Verhoeks and I caught the REI bug. Much like many others in this community I'm sure, I read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki and it changed my thinking dramatically.
Through a number of web searches and blog posts I ended up at BiggerPockets and I was immediately hooked. The community and resources available are invaluable. I created an account and got to work. After watching one of the latest webinars I decided to make the commitment and go Pro.
A little bit about myself - I'm 24 years old, born and raised in San Diego. My wife and I have a 16 month old son with another baby on the way. I'm a Civil Engineer by trade and we currently live in East County San Diego, California. I'm looking to start investing in either my local area or perhaps out-of-state in the Boise, Idaho area (potential relocation destination for my family).
As far as experience, I have just a bit - Without knowing exactly what I was doing, or the official term for it, I happened into a House Hacking situation. Last March, my wife and I bought our first home. The house was a 5 bed, 3 bath with an office. The reason we bought so big was because my mom and my 2 sisters needed a place to stay after we all sadly lost my father, and I wanted to help everyone get on their feet. Fast forward 1 year, my mom has moved out and gotten her own place, but my sisters and a friend are all still there renting out rooms. The rental income doesn't completely cover expenses, but it sure does help. The house's primary job is coming to a close as my mom has moved out and one of my sisters is going to be married in August. At that time I will most likely sell and take advantage of the equity gained through appreciation for a down payment on a new house-hack that cash flows more efficiently and allows my family more privacy.
What I'm looking for now is to network with local or out-of-state (Boise) investors to offer my services in any way that I can so I can better learn the business and expand my knowledge and portfolio.
Right now, rental properties appeal to me, specifically multifamily housing that can cash flow.
My long term goal is to achieve financial freedom through Real Estate Investing.
Thanks for reading, I look forward to learning more and getting to know all of you!
