New Chicago Investor!
Hello to everyone in the BP community -
My name is Ken Yu and I'd like to introduce myself to this wonderful community. I'd like to branch out my career in real estate and I think that Bigger Pockets is the best place to network online, hands down.
So, about me: grew up in an immigrant household, first generation American, lived in Chicago my entire life. I'm college educated, but deeply disenchanted with the whole notion of institutional learning. I like to learn, but I didn't enjoy the path that schooling tried to sell me on. To contrast, the freedom granted by learning about real estate excites me greatly.
I read Kiyosaki's Rich Dad Poor Dad last November, and I'm currently chewing through Cashflow Quadrant now. I'm pretty interested in reading Brandon Turner's books - it's hard to get away from the promoting when listening to so many BP podcasts. What I like about Kiyosaki's books is that you're taught the mental and emotional fortitude necessary to be successful and wealthy. However, I think it's time to start working on learning how to be successful on a physical level too, which is why I'm posting here today.
As for my business: Right now I'm working on wholesaling. There are plentiful properties on the south side neighborhoods of Chicago, as well as the southern suburbs. I've been doing a lot of research and putting offers out in houses in that general vicinity. However, I need to be working on finding reliable buyers - talking to buyers is my number one priority at the moment.
While I don't have the capital to reliably work on flips, I would say that I'm most interested in that aspect of the business. I really like the idea of taking forgotten and unwanted properties and turning them into something livable and affordable. A big problem with Chicago isn't the violence but rather it's source: hopeless pits of poverty are littered from block to block, and it's just disheartening to see neighborhoods fall into decline. There is so much good work that can be done. By fixing homes, I seek to keep middle class communities from sinking, which will mitigate these problems. But again, these are my dreams for the future, and right now I'm simply trying to gain my financial independence.
Anyway, I'm excited to join Bigger Pockets! Thank you all for reading!
