Getting my toes wet in the real estate market.

I'm a new member to the Bigger Pockets forum. I was told of Bigger Pockets from an investor friend of mine, and have been hooked (Listened to 3 hours of podcasts this morning alone). I have a steady job, own my own home, and am 23. My wife and I are looking to buy rental properties, but are worried to, due to not fully understanding the market, and the initial risk of it all. Is there any advice you would give your 23 year old self about getting in to the renter market? Maybe tricks you've learned about what to look for, how to find the right deal, or where to begin?

Thanks!
