Stepping Into the Investing World

Hi Everyone!

I'm a recent grad at NJIT for mechanical engineering and currently enrolled to go back and get my masters degree. I've always planned on making some extra money on the side with real estate, but I figured why not start now. My dad has a few buy and hold properties that he rents out. He suggested that I should wait until after I get my masters degree and find out where I'm actually going to be living and working before looking into getting a duplex to live in and rent out.

I figured this is probably the smartest idea, but anyone have any input? Should I try to find a duplex right now anyway and just rent both sides for now? Then possibly sell it in the future if I end up finding a job somewhere else?
