Becoming a Real Estate investor at 19?

Jarvis Tang

Hello!  My name is Jarvis Tang from Honolulu, Hawaii.  I am 19 years old and am very interested in learning to do business in Real Estate.

What originally got me interested in real estate was that I was looking for different ways to invest money that I had and through my research I learned about buying and renting out properties.

I know that there is a lot more to it than just buying and then getting a tenant to collect rent from, but I feel like you would have much more control over this type of investment than say.. stocks.  I may just say that because I am young and inexperienced but stocks don't really strike a chord with me.  It's not something I'd want to put time into.

Real Estate on the other hand seems pretty exciting because it is like you have your own type of business that you run depending on what you get yourself into.

I know that I do not know much in this field and that there is much more to Real Estate than becoming landlords, or buying and flipping houses, but that is why I'm here on BP!

I'm excited to learn from all the members on this forum and hopefully be able to get into this career field one day.

@Jarvis Tang

Welcome, take a good look at student housing see below. Vacation rentals also work in HI.

Check out the Start Here page http://www.biggerpockets.com/starthere

Locate and attend 3 different local REIA club meetings great place to meet people gather resources and info. Here you will meet wholesalers who provide deals and rehabbers (cash buyers). Find them through Google and meetup.com

Two Great reads, I bought both J. Scott The Book on Flipping Houses, The Book on Estimating ReHab Costs http://www.biggerpockets.com/flippingbook

You might consider Niche or Specialized Housing like student housing. Rents can be 2-4 times more. Remember you don't have to own a property to control it.
