Physician from Wisconsin starting to invest by end of the year

I am a person who likes challenges, and real estate investing piqued my interest. After entertaining multiple aspects of real estate investing, my wife and I will be pursuing our first buy and hold property by the end of the year.  It will be a smaller property, 2-4 units, purchased locally, just so we can get our feet wet.  The ultimate goal is to buy 1-2 properties per year, each being larger units and in different markets whereby a management company can take over.  Initially I will be the property manager for the smaller units, as I am able to take care of most issues and renovations.  Currently, I am in the research phase of learning about investing, managing properties and everything in between.  It is here how I learned of Bigger Pockets, as I currently am finished with the first of 3 books I purchased.  

My intent for being on the site is to make contacts and networking.
