Newbie from Denver, CO
Hello friends! My name is Derek Jess. I'm a financial advisor in the Denver metro looking to build up a solid portfolio of rental properties in the area. The Denver market is extremely hot, and to find a good deal seems quite challenging (but I know it can be done).
I was previously a personal banker, and have an extensive background in lending (including HELOCs - they were my bread and butter). The thing I enjoyed most about this job was working with real estate investors. I never connected the dots until just now, but this is probably what initially got me excited about real estate. Any who, if you have questions about how loans work, what the underwriting process looks like, and how to best leverage them to grow your business, I'm your man.
In addition to meeting some incredible people through the website, I'm looking to connect with investors in Denver, Golden, Boulder, and Longmont to learn and add value however I can. Thanks for having me!

Thanks @Bryan O.! I'll certainly be visiting and hope to meet you soon. @Ryan Sanders, I do have a friend down in the springs that's an engineer - we may partner up for a few deals down there at some point. Thanks @James Wise and @Luke Schrotberger, glad to be here!
I think you're right @Matt M., many advisors miss out on this piece. I'm certainly not in a position to offer blanket statements - every person's situation is different, and real estate/investing may not appropriate for everyone. I personally think it can be a critical piece (not 100%) of a larger financial plan. If done correctly, I especially like rental properties as a way to generate some serious income in retirement. That being said, I cringe at the idea of throwing all of your eggs into this basket (no liquidity), over-leveraging to buy more properties than you can afford, not maintaining adequate cash reserves, etc. It takes diligent financial planning to minimize risk and grow this portion of your portfolio responsibly.
Thanks, all, for the warm welcome!
