Just got started today; what should I know?

Hey Guys!
Heard about Bigger Pockets today and was a little curious; aaaaaannd here I am all signed up with an account typing an introduction. I don't know much about real estate and I've been very interested in learning about it recently. I am a bit skeptical about it now especially after the stock market collapse in 2008 and the housing market going down the drain as a result (and I just watched The Big Short so I'm pretty well informed about it, ha!). 

It would definitely be interesting to know the different opinions and experiences others have had to make sure I'm making the right moves when I'm ready.
