Updated almost 9 years ago,
Excited Noob currently residing in Pearl River, NY!
Hey Everyone!
My name is Anthony and I'm currently a UI Developer working in Ridgewood, NJ and living in Pearl River, NY. I'm a huge NFL fan, and I even host a fantasy football podcast, as well as write, for TheFantasyAuthority.com. I'm a bit of a gaming nerd too and love techy things and new innovations (Tesla me man!). I did grow up in the woods of Northwestern NJ though (Montague) so I have a deep affinity for nature and animals too.
I stumbled onto the REI scene just a few short weeks ago after having to call the cops (yet again) on our downstairs neighbor in our current rental. As my girlfriend and I sat there thinking to ourselves (at 3am, now wide awake after the neighbors had a physical fight and shook the house for a solid half hour) "there's gotta be a better way", I took to Google and started my Real Estate Research.
We've been living together now for 3 years, and have had the unfortunate circumstance of having to live in a different apartment each year for one reason or another. This current one, by far, being the worst. So we know what it's like to LIVE with bad tenants and we're all too aware of what bad tenants can do. We also have had the luxury of dealing with both GOOD and BAD landlords so I sort of feel like we have a jump on that scene as well.
Our area is expensive, as those of you in the surrounding neighborhoods can attest to, so the struggle will be real, but everything I've read so far on BiggerPockets.com and in the The Book on Rental Property Investing (which I finished in just a week, world record for me!) has me super excited to get out there and get to work!
We have a plan to start off with house hacking since we only have about 20k saved up at this moment, so I've reached out to a realtor (from a reference!) and got the ball rolling. I've also started crunching the numbers on at least 3 properties a day, as described in The Bigger Pockets Podcast Episode 142: 22.5 Actionable Tips for Beginner Real Estate Investors. I'll admit, I'm still not too confident I'm accounting for all expenses correctly, and even recently found a Triplex near my parents that came back with a whopping 55% Cash on Cash ROI, so the skeptic in me for that particular property is strong.
On top of all that, I've also joined the Rockland Real Estate Investment Association on meetup.com and am super excited to attend my first meetup with them. It's all a very exciting process and I find myself starving for more information every day. As it is, I just started on The Book on Managing Rental Properties and have plans to hit the local library for Rich Dad, Poor Dad among others often mentioned here on the site and in the podcast.
Well, that was a pretty long-winded post, but really I just wanted to say HEY! and tell everyone how excited I am to get into the Real Estate world. I look forward to speaking (and maybe even working) with you all!
