Newbie military couple interested in Portland, OR & Wisconsin markets

Hey BPers!

My husband Sean and I are new to real estate investing, but can't wait to get started. We're soaking up as much info on BP as we can and working our way through the recommended REI books. Thank you all for this amazing resource!

A little background on us: my husband is a Captain in the Marine Corps and I am a freelance marketing copywriter. We're originally from Wisconsin but are being stationed in Portland, OR this summer. Our plan is to buy our first rental property in the Portland metro area, live in it, and then buy at least one rental property each year thereafter.

We're currently looking at a few properties in the close-in Portland neighborhoods as well as Milwaukie. (Any local input on that neighborhood? It seems to have potential.) We're interested in duplexes or small multi-families.

After our initial purchase in the Portland area, we'll be opening our search to our home state of Wisconsin as well (focusing on the Fox Valley/Appleton area or Milwaukee metro).

We appreciate any and all input from the BP community, especially in these next few months as we transition in the Portland market.

THANK YOU!

Welcome to BP @Beth McCullough!!! Glad to have you here. BP has been great. Make sure to listen to the podcasts. They are super informative, entertaining and funny. I too am a new investor.

I have lived in the Milwaukee metro area all of my life. Not sure how long it's been since you've visited, but some area have changed, for better or for worse. I believe that the market is ripe with potential. Duplexes are readily available. The areas around the colleges(UWM,MSOE) have great rents. East side neighborhoods do well also with all the shops in the area. I know you stated that investing in Milwaukee might be down the line, but take a look at the MLS when you have some time. I think this will help you get a good feel of the type of properties that are available and prices.

Best of luck to you,

William
