New investor in San Francisco

Hi BiggerPockets' Community!

I'm a planning-to-be buy and hold rental investor based in San Francisco. :) I work in the tech industry now, and hope to eventually leave the grind behind after gaining recurring income in real estate.

I have one experience with real estate investment about six/seven years ago. I speculated on a unit under construction in a development in Florida with a friend. We were able to sell it right before the crash in 2008 for some profit (but we just barely missed the crash)! But we got lucky, and really didn't know what we were doing.

BP has been a great resource so far to help establish a baseline and to start learning more about RE investing! I've already read the getting started guide, which was awesome, and I've been listening to podcasts and lurking around the site.

I have some funds to get started with the actual investment, and I’m excited to do so! My next step is to identify a market or markets where I'd like to invest. Closeby would be best, I know, but due to prices around CA I'm starting to look remote. Any advice and reccomendations are greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone for putting such great info on the site. I'm looking forward to attending the local meetup tomorrow, learning, and sharing back when I can!

Marc
