New member from Afghanistan

hi, I'm currently serving overseas in Afghanistan as an logistical officer. My hometown is northern virginia and I am very new to real estate investing. My commander and others have told me I should look to invest what I earned from this deployment and look into real estate. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!!
