Converting personal home into rental property. (suggestions, tips)

In the future I plan on converting my home into a rental, I'm currently in the navy and I think utilizing the VA loan would be a good tool to get started in rental property investing. Looking for any tips or insight to anyone who has done this or is knowledgeable in the area.
