You Don't Know what you Don't Know...ya Know?
First off, been in this Bigger Pockets community about a week now, and couldn't be more glad that I joined. Thanks to everyone who is so active and helpful out there. Onto the point...
On each end of the spectrum you have "newbs" who jump into REI with no regard for the risks and without nearly enough education, just waiting to get burned...then you have those (like myself) who have spent years reading and learning but can't seem to take the leap, for fear of getting burned...
HOW do you know when you're ready to get started? All you recent first-timers and long-time investors alike... What concepts are crucial and what needs to just be learned by doing? Any essential readings/experiences/homework recommended to help gauge whether or not you are ready to jump in? Thanks

Welcome to BP @Brandon Schick!
My philosophy is this: Fear of getting burned will only hold you back. That applies in all areas of life, not just REI. You'll never know everything there is to know and the only way to progress is to take that first step and do your first deal. It will either work out great, or not so great. Either way it will be a learning experience. If your goals are important enough to you, you'll keep mushing on :)
Something really changed in my mindset after I did my first deal (April 2013), things became more real. All the concepts, rules, guides, experiences, etc, that I learned from my studies were now in-play in a real world scenario. It was the best feeling ever and continues to be today. I hope you experience the same thing when you make your first move!
I've since picked up 4 additional deals since that first one and each time, I learn more and figure out better ways to do things. I'll probably look back on my first year in REI and laugh about all the things I didn't see/plan for. But hell, it's working for me :)

If that's not enough, just realize you have the biggest network on the planet of helpful, no-pitch real estate investors just dieing to share knowledge/experience. It's hard to go wrong with the input/advice/analysis of thousands of successful investors; take advantage of this resource!
