Hello, from Albuquerque, NM!
Hello BiggerPockets community! I am Erik from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and I'm excited to get a chance to know everyone and make my brain explode with the abundance of information this community has to offer!
I moved to Albuquerque from Colorado Springs, Colorado over 4 years ago with my wife who grew up here. We moved back to become Managing Partners at her Mom's restaurant that was established in 1965! We have plans to build the brand and possibly open a few more locations in the next few years.
My real estate background starts with my Dad. He has always had a passion for real estate. He got his broker's license when I was very young while he was in the Air Force and wanted to have it in his back pocket when he bought or sold personal properties with the hopes to become an investor. This means I was raised learning about real estate, seeing a lot of different properties, and I eventually became a residential real estate appraiser in the Colorado Springs area.
I was an appraiser in Colorado Springs from 2003 to 2007. During this time my wife and I bought our first home...in 2006. My business was really prospering, just in time for the market to tank and for AMC's to begin their choke-hold on the industry. I decided to move away from the real estate industry and try my hand at something new. After a short stint at a T-Mobile tech support call center, we decided it was time to move to Albuquerque to help my wife's Mom out with her restaurant. Also, we bought our home at the height of the local market. So when it came time to move, we were greatly upside down in our mortgage and couldn't come to the table with any cash to be able to sell, thus becoming "default landlords"...long distance ones at that!
The restaurant industry is really tough! It requires an insane amount of hours to ensure the whole operation is running smoothly. Since this is a new and fairly exciting industry to me, I have yet to jump ship.
However, since the restaurant industry is so exhausting and time consuming, my attention is gravitating back to the real estate industry as a way to make passive income. I one day hope to become a full time investor and create the lifestyle I have always envisioned for my wife and I. Hint, it involves a lot of travel and beach time. I really think BP is a treasure trove of information that can help me get started. I also hope I can contribute half as well as this amazing community can!
Thanks for your time!
