Property managers, help with tips?

Hi everyone, new to the property game but been doing research with a group of friends trying to get our first investment property. We have discussed property managers but are unsure about certain things. Like what benifits can we get hiring someone? What is the monthly cost in hiring a property manager? Would they be a good fit running the property? 
is every state different in property managers?
any tips? Looking into properties in California
