Phoenix tree trimming recommendation

I have a rather large tree in Mesa AZ that I think is dead and it needs cut down or at least trimmed so it's safe from falling. The companies I've checked with wanted thousands of dollars to cut it down. I'm not sure if that's the going rate but it seems kind of expensive to me. Anybody got a good recommendation on a company that will cut a tree down and not cost me an arm and a leg.
