Tiny house movement- you know anything?

Question

Wondering if anybody has done anything with tiny house movement? Would it fall under camp spots? (A tiny house community) What are your thoughts? have you any experiance with tiny houses?

post pictures if you have a tiny house and some info. tell me your story.

@Leigh Ann Smith that is awesome. i would think there are many reasons somebody would want to rent one of your locations. the land use, the downsizing experiance.... the country life.... and just getting out in nature. it brings peace to the soul. You will be pleasantly surprised i think, the only issue as you say is the low end riffs- maybe you could do a vacation type rental.  you could rec' 700 for one week, and it would not always have neighbors... but you could still make the same cash with less headache. like maybe with alababa is it? But have it set up and ran as a VR so legally you could boot somebody out with less headache if you have to.

I would like to, maybe someday in the future. I have decided to sell my land that i was goin to do that to. only because i do NOT know how to get the cash to accomplish it and i do have a business that is taking off and i  need to go with it. cause it can make me $60 G in one month. anyway, i am still intrigued with the tiny house homestead idea.. maybe on an offgrid organic farm; to go along with my wild food plant business.

That is the one thing that is fallin into place. I have inc. and the doors are openin for retail sales this spring.... and with the sale of my land i can purchase a nice pc of land that has product for a REAL good deal. Plus there is a homestead site that i can buy for $20G/ 10 ac with a mobile and loaded with apple trees, plus another peice i can aquire across the road thro and owner finance. I could see possibly doing a tiny rental there. people are intrigued with nature, and getting away from the rat race to find peace from the hub bub of life. And they are interested in sustainable green way of life... there is SO much to do outside. Walk through the woods, go to the stream, garden, watch wildlife.... just relax.

Hi @Annette Ammarell, sorry it's taken me 4 months to jump in here!  We bought a tiny house on wheels and are setting it up as a vacation rental.  We live on 35 acres where we operate a Christmas tree farm and the tiny house is here as well.

It's been quite a process because we had to run electric and water to the site and have a septic system installed.  Basically, we put in 3 RV hookups.  If the first house is a success, we can add 2 more.

By my calculations, if we can net $700 per month, the return will be as good as any SFR we've see in our area.  We paid $30K for the house + another $15k on electric, septic, & putting in a road.  There will still be another couple of thousand to furnish the house.

The big unknown for us is occupancy.  There is nothing nearby that anyone would want to visit, except that we are only 30 min from the Texas Medical Center and from downtown Houston.  But, we're on a Christmas tree farm, so we hope that the ambiance of that will be appealing.

We do not want to rent to standard renters.  First of all, I think people believe that a tiny house should be super-cheap.  Secondly the tiny house is about 100 yds from our home, and we don't want renters to be junking up our place.

Are you still considering setting up some tiny houses?

awesome Account Closed that is what we were thinking... you could hook up like a camper to water and power. I dont know how sewer system works... someone told me that they have compost toilets.

ugh! I wish you could mention people on here that aren't on the thread...but D.ALarson has an ebook & this site MiniCabinFever.com about his tiny house/cabin build from a repurposed shed, Teri S. & Leigh Ann Smith...off the top of my head have built/are building tiny house communities, so to speak.

Sounds like things are going great for you, @Annette Ammarell!  It also sounds like adding a tiny house to one or more of your properties eventually might be a good fit.  We do plan to go the vacation rental route to start with.  If there isn't enough demand, then we'll look into other ideas.

We are kind of the same way with being torn between businesses.  We have a nice barn at our farm that we've used for a couple of family/friend weddings & parties.  We are adding a covered pavilion in a few weeks and are starting to realize that renting the barn & pavilion out could be pretty lucrative.....if we can figure out how to add bathrooms without putting in a $40K septic system.  People don't want to use porta-potties for nice events.  Those nice restroom trailers rent for $1200 per weekend.  😱  Talk about a cash flow killer!

I really appreciate how so much of the stuff I've learned from BP really applies to any kind of business.  I have honed my spreadsheet skills by analyzing properties, and it's helped me to understand better how to analyze profitability in general.

Don't know about tiny houses, but I suspect they would be very similar to RV's?
