Hotel Occupancy Tax

Just a reminder to everyone doing short term rentals to check with your county to see if you need to be paying a hotel occupancy tax. VRBO collects state tax for our little cabin but they don't collect the county hotel occupancy tax and I didn't realize it until this week.

We have been renting our cabin for 18 months now and I never paid the county the 7% hotel occupancy tax, ooops. I had to write 18 checks and fill out 18 single page forms (local government efficiency at its finest) yesterday to catch up. In our county you are required to pay monthly and they want the form even if you don't have any guests that month. They were nice and didn't charge me the 10% penalty though.
