STR limitations in Chapel Hill?

Dillon Cockrell
Posted

I'm looking to get into REI in the Chapel Hill or Carrboro area, and have been considering STRs. I'm confused by the city limitations on dedicated STR as it looks like they're quite restricted, although there are many on AirBnb that look like they are in locations that may be against the regulation. Does anyone have any familiarity with the area and the STR policies?

Chapel Hill used to be very lax with STR - but that changed in 2021. Now, they are very strict and prohibit operating a non-owner occupied STR.

Raleigh/Durham doesn't prohibit STR, and it can be a stand alone property, however, a lot of neigborhoods in Raleigh/Durham and surrounding areas are within HOA, so those covenants rule.
