Do you allow access to the garage and if so, how?

Hello BP Community,

I am asking for some opinions/suggestions on providing garage access for STR use.  Do you give access to the garage?  If so, how do you manage that?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We don't allow access to our garage. People have asked, but that is a main storage area for extra stuff for the house.

I have rented houses and always had access to the garage. Usually a garage door opener is left out and door from garage was left unlocked.

Our homes have attached garages and we also have a golf cart for each house for use by the guest, so guests have access to the garages and we provide 2 garage door openers for each home, one for the car and one for the golf cart.

No. It is for our personal use only. We have an air conditioned game room in the main house (a lot of STRs down here use the garage as a game room) so there is literally no reason for guests to access the garage area. We have it with a coded deadbolt so the PM can get into the garage if there's ever an issue with the water heater or electric panel, and could provide that info to a guest in an emergency if necessary.

I plan on storing an extra car in the garage in the next year or two so that when I go to stay for an extended period we've got access to 2 vehicles.

My garage is separate from the house, so I don't allow access. In the future we will renovate it and turn it into a game room and bunk house, then I will charge more.

I had a falconer that fed his 14 birds in the back yard of an STR last year. A few weeks after he moved out i had 2 game wardens show up at my house asking questions.  A game warden is the equivalent of a federal marshall. A few months ago the falconer called me and wanted a place to stay.  I gave him the same house along with keys to the 2 car garage to keep/feed the falcons.

I have left the garage door opener for guests with longer stays.  We are close to the ocean and the salt air is rough on vehicles.  I envisioned the remotes accidentally driving off with my guests, but that hasn't happened yet.

So many factors involved.  Where can you make extra cash.  If there is on street parking you can charge extra for the use of the garage.   Do you know someone that wants to use the garage for extra $.  Do you use the condo and maybe store a vehicle there? Just use your imagination.  And what you are comfortable with.
