Getting started, looking for advice

Just getting started and trying to develop my game plan. I would like to purchase a duplex so I can live in one and rent the other. I think it would be beneficial because I need experience landlording, and want to start small with a single family. Now to my question: since I'm new to this, would it better to use a management company or can I do it myself? If I decided to do it myself, how do I go about the legal side of things (i.e. lease contracts, etc) .
