Apartment vs. Townhome rental property

I am Newbie just looking to get into the rental game. There is an apartment that my wife and I are looking into, it's in a building that is 12 units, 3 stories. it's newly upgraded and in a great location, but am hesitant due to apartment style living being harder to rent than a townhome. I live in a white-hot rental and housing market in the midwest, so any experience insights would be much appreciated.
