Covid relief and/or DSS fraud concern
Hi, I haven't been here in a while. I've had a reliable tenant stop paying rent quite a few months ago. She explained her personal issues to men and was willing to work with her. She told me I needed to send her a request for back rent letter and so I did, twice. One for the 1st month missed and then a 2nd for the 2nd month.
She then requested a W9 for tax related purposes and I also sent her that. Shortly after, I was driving and answered a call. I was somewhat distracted when talking to the person on the other end when she told me a home inspection was required. It was scheduled for the following day of the conversation, and she told me I was welcome to be there. It was too short of notice and I had something I had to take care of so I let the inspection go on without my presence. At one point, I asked a question and the woman said I filled out a form and it had my signature on it. In my haste of the conversation, I assumed it was the rent request I sent the tenant.
Recently, I talked to the tenant in person. I asked her who she was dealing with when it came to the re-inspection because it was well past the date on the document I received form code enforcement, and I hadn't heard back from anyone. She mentioned both covid relief and then DSS being to ones who ordered the home inspection.
I'm trying to figure out how this process works before calling DSS and asking questions. I feel my tenant may have filled out a form with my name on it but I don't want to jump to conclusions.
My property is in Rensselaer county, NY. I have a fraud number I can call, but was hoping to receive some incite first.
I have a painting business and have been so busy with work, I've had little time to work on this issue.
Thanks in advance!
