To put a dishwasher in a basement suite or not

Tyler Lynn
Posted

Hey! I recently purchased a property and am in the process of converting the basement into a legal suite, It is going to be a two bedroom unit. I was wondering what people’s opinions are on putting a dishwasher in the basement or if a sink to do dishes would be enough? Thanks for your time !

NO! I own several apartment buildings and I remove every dishwasher and garbage disposer and not one tenant every complained. A high percent of tenants will never use a dishwasher because most people want to pre-rinse the dishes in their sink and if you have to do that then you may as well wash the dishes. My wife and I had a dishwasher and never used it one time in 18 years.

And...garbage disposer stink. They are literally garbage cans where the garbage spatters in the inside walls and under the large black gasket. There are many things you cannot put in a garbage disposer, anyway, and most tenants, including myself, put garbage in plastic bags and throw it in the trash.

The less you own the less you have to maintain.
