turning SFR to multifamily

I have my eye on a a single family residence with an in-law suite and large finished basement and would love to find out how to turn this property into a duplex or triplex. Anyone have any experience with this process. Is this plausible? What all would be involved. Would I have to get a separate tax ID for all units? Separately metered? zoning considerations? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
