Questions on uses for vacant land

Just wondering -- if you buy a vacant parcel of land, what would be the uses for it? Meaning, outside of building a house on it?

Can you get the city to approve different zoning for it? I'm sure you couldn't just turn it into a landfill for example, but what if you wanted to use it for the following:

a) Create a large community garden

b) Create a "park-like" space with picnic tables and grilling stations

c) Create a playground

d) Put a mobile home on it

e) Put storage sheds/buildings on it

f) Create a basketball court

g) Create a tree farm
