Handling Kitchen Odor in connected units

Hello,

In my duplex the units are connected such that the kitchen odors do flow from one unit to another inspite of the exhaust fans which exhausts outdoors. Its actually because the mother in law unit is connected to the main unit. I am researching solutions, I will greatly appreciate if someone can share some insights to any solutions.
