How do you handle fraudulent service animal claim?
How do you handle a fraudulent service animal claim?
The tenant submitted a "prescription" letter for an emotional support animal through petscreening.com. When petscreening.com contacted the service provider to confirm the letter, the counselor responded, "Someone has changed the date. I do not practice providing ESA letters for clients I have not seen in the past six months. The letter dated June 21, 2021 did not come from my office."
My state law says fraudulent claims are subject to a fine of up to $750 but they give no guidance on who to report it to, how to report it, or how it would be investigated and fined. In other words, it's just a law with no teeth.
I created my own response, but I'm curious to hear how others have handled this.
