Landlord lost $60,000 in rent, Tenant walks away
As the Landlord admits, he's partially to blame because he failed to conduct a background check. If he had, he probably would have learned these are habitual offenders. We used to call them thieves.

Our justice system is so screwed up and heavily favored toward renters that they can steal $60,000 and walk away without penalty.

This is an extreme situation with the tenant actually admitting to doing this before and intentionally. I believe this pattern of behavior and statements the tenant made could build a good case for criminal fraud. They likely lied on their application and signed a lease contract agreeing to pay monthly, with the intent to not pay. Fraud is exactly this, deception for financial gain. In an extreme case like this, there needs to be prosecution for financial crimes.
Background checks are important, but also just Google peoples names. Robert Maura and Faith Maura are the tenants in this situation. Make them internet famous for being scammers, so that no unsuspecting landlord rents to them again.
