Renting to out of country residents

In my area of Northern CA we get a lot of people that are coming out of country for a local church ministry and stay anywhere from 1 year plus. I was curious if any landloards have had to navigate this when it comes to screening. How would you run a background/credit check? I would hate to rule out potential good tenants due to certain criteria not being met. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
