What to look for in Rental Management Companies?

What do investors look for when finding a management company out of state? I keep hearing of management companies being crooks and as a broker would like to offer this to investors I work with. It wouldn't be worth it to do a couple properties so I need to decide if I want to build the management company or what to ask and look for when interviewing other management companies?
