Removing Partial Wall

How would you approach removing a partial wall ( which is splitting the living room).

I plan on hiring a structural engineer to assess it and then have my handyman do the job. But I am not sure if this something that should only be given to General Contractor. I dont know what runs behind the drywall and if its load-bearing.
