Converting primary residence to rental property

Hey everyone,

I am just getting started in real estate. Back in August 2020 I moved into a new home and decided to keep my old house as a rental property. With everything going on with the move to the new house and my day job I did not get the house rented out last year. I've finally got the house ready to rent out and am working through a management company to get a tenant in. Does anyone know if I can still write off the expenses (mortgage/utilities/etc) for the house from September through December even though I didn't have a tenant at all last year?
