Some house-hacking questions

Stephanie Szeto
Posted

1. How do people deal with communal furniture in a house-hacking set-up? Does the owner always buy all the communal furniture?

2. When it comes to utilities / wifi / etc, do you still charge separately for it all or lump it all together with rent?

3. Do folks have any special ways to determine how much to estimate for single bedroom rentals? I'm primarily thinking of lurking on Facebook Marketplace / Craigslist to see how much single rooms are going for, but would love any other suggestions.

Thanks!

1. Yes, in my experience. At least that's what I have done.

2. All one lump sum combined in the rent amount.

3. Facebook and craigslist have always been my go to for house hacking ads. I've not found anything better. Make sure you specify that it is a 1 bedroom house share, not a 1 bedroom apartment otherwise you will get swamped with a bunch of angry renters @Stephanie Szeto

Good luck! :) I've house hacked for 3 years now, tag me if you have any other questions.
