Buying Insurance vs Self Insured

For Investors with a significant number of SFH, do you still buy Home Insurance or do you set aside money to self-insure? Most of my properties have loans on them, so I need to keep insurance but as I pay them off, it would be nice to just have money set aside for the big repairs needed instead of paying the insurance companies. Thoughts?

@Andrew S. you touch on a good point that bears reminding. The umbrella only applies when there is underlying coverage😱. So OP's personal umbrella outside th LLC may not work the way he thinks.
