Couchsurfing.com and day by day rentals. Any info or experience?

I was talking to my brother today and he told me had a conversation with a local investor who said he was renting one of his units day by day, mainly to users of the site Couchsurfing.com. He rents per night for around $90 and has no problem filling the unit.

Has anyone ever heard of a rental on these terms? And what would differentiate this from a motel, if at all?
