Water shut off due to "Leak" Advice Needed
First things first, this is in southern California for reference.
I have been renting through Trade as a property manager for the last six years at the same property. A couple of years ago a new owner bought the property and we had a verbal hand shake agreement about me living on property and handling the property management for them per guest needs in the night time hours. As of late they have also been forcing me to do property showings for them during the day including all property information, sales rates, and property line information, all of which I only have from working for the previous owner for so long even before moving onto property. I took this implication in stride as I didn't want to create any bumps in my living situation.
As of yesterday the owners had the water for the entire property shut off without notice.
I discovered this when I went to take a shower and found the water did not turn on.
When I questioned them about it they only mentioned the leak.
I immediately expressed the urgency of this matter as this makes my living quarters uninhabitable. I asked for a date and time it would be inspected and fixed. The owner proceeded to then tell me they did not know when they would get around to having someone find the leak or fix it, followed by telling me to find somewhere else to stay till they decided to fix it.
I let the landlord/owner know this was unacceptable, we have a verbal contract, I do not have family where I live, nor somewhere I can go, NOR can I afford to simply go stay at a hotel, not to mention I have animals.
The owner proceeded to just continue to say they don't know and find somewhere to stay till then.
I had my own plumber take a look at the main water shut off, there is no tag nor lock from the city claiming they are the ones that shut the water off, this leads me to believe the owner's had someone shut it off themselves.
I feel I am not only within my rights to contact the water company to verify but to also contact the county health department regarding Renter's Rights.
I would appreciate advice from long time tenants as well as landlord's on my rights here. Though I do not have a written contract I do have a verbal contract, as well as endless text's and emails that prove I live on property, this includes a PO BOX linked to my address, and testimonial from employees at the property.
Thank you in advance!
