Should I report this to the owner of the property?
In July of 2019 i rented a house. The rental agent had the property listed for a 10 month lease. At the time I was near desperate so I agreed to the 10 month lease. The agent said something about 'the owner wanted the lease to end at a certain time'. The rental agent would not put this in writing but verbally assured me I would be able to renew the lease after month 10 and it would be a 12 month lease. I know this is worth nothing but I am just stating it. So I loved the house and this spring planned to renew the lease. I was a perfect tenant, paid my rent early, became friends with all the neighbors etc. I really loved the house and the neighborhood. The lease was through the end of April. The agent said nothing in the previous months even though I was in regular communication with them about other matters. So I assumed the verbal offer to renew the lease would stand. I trusted the agent. May 1st, the agent comes to my door with notice that I need to be out by May 31st. This was unexpected obviously. I had to rush to find a new place, shell out thousands in deposits and ended up paying 15 days rent on the new place when I was still renting the old place. I understand this is how it goes sometimes but: The property stayed vacant through June and now the rental agent has it for rent again with a 10 month lease. Here are my questions: Why would a property owner rent a house for 10 months, kick out a model tenant, have the property vacant for a month losing a months (or however long it takes to find a new tenant) rent and then put it back up for rent the next month? I have been told by the neighbors that this rental agent did this to the tenant before me. The owner is out of state so I am wondering if they even know about it. Perhaps the rental agent told them that I did not want to renew the lease. Does a rental agent get a bigger commission for a new lease versus a renewal and if so how much more? I would hate to think that my life was upended and I had to move away from a place that I really loved just so an agent could make an extra couple of hundred dollars. Thank you in advance for your help.
