My Good Landlord Story
Politicians and the news media want to paint landlords in a negative light. The recent legislation to delay evictions takes away landlord rights and assumes landlords will do the wrong thing. It assumes all tenants will do the right thing. What they fail to recognize is the stories of landlord kindness and compassion. They rush to judge the majority based on the minority. In many cases they lift up "bad tenants" and act as though they are victims.
Almost every eviction is due to a tenant created situation due to irresponsible behavior. Bad money management with reckless spending, breaking rules, damaging property, drug use and even crime in some cases. Tenants who lose their jobs have options, but some tenants who lose their job refuse to get assistance. They don't apply for unemployment, they don't reach out to non-profit groups that provide rent assistance. They lie to landlords, bounce checks and as they are not paying in some cases - they even damage the property. What I describe is the minority, but landlords who take advantage is an even smaller minority.
Please share your "Good Landlord Story". Whether it is COVID or other situations, how have helped tenants so they could stay in your property through a difficult situation? How have you tried to lift them up so they can have a better life for themselves and their family?
