How do I handle utilites once I move?

Evan Jackson
Posted

Hi Guys,

So I've just recently purchased a property with 3 bedrooms 1.5 baths on the upper level, and the basement has an in-law suite with a separate kitchen bathroom and bedroom. I currently live in the basement and am looking to rent out the upsatirs but I am pondering the future.

Eventually I would like to move out and rent out my old space in the basement, but in this scenario how would I handle utilities with two tenets living in a single family home? The basement has independent heating and air with a minisplit AC unit but there is only one meter for the house, and installing a separate meter is simply too expensive currently.

I was thinking keeping utilities in my name and billing tenets separately on a 60/40 split. Any other suggestions on how to handle utilities in this situation?

Thanks,

Evan
