why should I pay the rent? For keeping key?

We are foreigners and have an issue with our property management company now. We dont know how to deal with it. We need help please.

We have a rental contract with the company which will be end at the end of this July. But we have to move before this April. We recommed another lady (finded by Zillow) who applied our apartment and passed the background check with the company. The three sides the company, new renter and we make a new agreement in the manage compay on Febrary 11th. We signed the sublet agreement with the company separately, I attached bellow. And the new tenant signed a new rental contact with the campany at the same time.

But when we are ready to tranfer the key to new renter on March 31th, she told me she had some concerns like, repainting and repair and would like to contact the property management company. She refused to take the keys and told me she would contact me later to have the key.

We are waiting and we find the company are repainting the wall during this time. So we think the new renter will contact us for the key later. But the company emailed me yesterday and said because we still have the key we need to pay the rent for the left 4 months.

We can't accept it. But we dont know how to deal with it.
