Rental Cancellation "Fee"
My fiancee and I have been on-time tenants for the past 12 months and just received our rate increase of 13%. We asked what the rule is on terminating early if we renew again...but we move part way through. She said I would be required to give 2 months notice and pay 1 additional months rent or give 1 month notice and pay 2 additional months rent.
My question is: is it legal to charge me 2 months additional rent if the unit is re-rented within 2 weeks of me leaving? It was my understanding that as soon as a new tenant occupies a space the old tenant is not obligated to continue paying.
