Returning pet deposit early.

Hello,

I had a tenant move in and pay a pet deposit but when they moved their pet didn't make the move (cat).  Seeing how everything is going with the pandemic they would like to know if they can have the deposit back.  How is that handled mid rent legally?  The property is in Texas.  Do I just have them sign a quick receipt saying they received it back already?
